Description
This painting was inspired by the 17th century Dutch "vanitas" paintings, in which each object in a still life arrangement is imbued with symbolism. My painting "Mom's Kitchen" is not so much a still life, but is in many way a "portrait" of my dear Mom. with each object symbolizing a different aspect of her personality and life.
The large central figure of Our Lady of Guadalupe is well know in the Mexican culture as a symbol of hope to the downtrodden, and God knows, as a widowed mother of 11 kids (yes, eleven! ) my poor Mom sure needed plenty of hope and faith to keep the family together! The figure of St. Francis, symbolizes her gentle loving spirit, and her love for animals, while the Ajax cleanser represents her toughness and grit in the face of adversity.
For the sake of brevity, I will leave it at that, and end by saying this painting is not for sale, despite many requests I have had to sell it. It has deep sentimental meaning to me, since my Mom passed away a couple years ago.
However, you can order prints here through Fine Art America.
